Front Panel Express  Extra Services
Front Panel Designer
A big thank you to everyone who completed our survey we conducted at the beginning of June. Since we are still receiving newly completed surveys, we will wait to publish a summary of the final results until the July Newsletter.

However, thanks to an already high response rate, we have a pretty good idea of what additional services our customers would like to see. A few of those services are already offered at Front Panel Express. In this newsletter, we will summarize the extra services we currently offer and how to utilize those services on your next order. If your suggestion is not on the list - no worries – there will be more Front Panel Express services available soon. We will keep you informed.

1. Sanded Edges
Would you prefer your panel edges smooth with no milling marks? No problem! We will sand the edges of your panels for a small surcharge of $3/ panel – regardless of size or complexity.

To order, simply indicate in the remarks field in Front panel properties that you would like to have the edges sanded.

2. Beveled Edges

Another option for smoother edges is the beveled edge. We can apply a 45 degree bevel to any interior cutout, or to the exterior edge. For the outer edge, the maximum depth is 5mm, and can be set to depth of up to .5mm short of the panel thickness. Interior cutouts can be beveled at the full panel thickness. The cost of beveled edges depends on the complexity of the panel.

To request beveled edges, indicate in the remarks field in Front panel properties that you would like beveled edges and indicate the depth. We will confirm any additional charges before we process your order.

3. Tapped Edges

Tapped edges, which can ease the assembly process, is another useful service we offer. The illustration below shows how to design and order a panel with tapped edges:

4. Custom Engraving Color

For custom infill colors, other than those provided by Front Panel Express, we can order any available RAL Color. There is a one-time fee of $70 to order a custom color. We will then store the color for you until it expires to use on future orders, at no additional cost.

To order custom infill colors, contact our customer service department at with your desired RAL color. This process may take up to 6 weeks to receive your custom color.

5. Design Service

If you don't have our software downloaded, we can convert your design into a Front Panel Designer file for you for a small fee. Once the file is converted, we can set up a customized quote. For a free, no-obligation quote for the conversion of your drawing and the production of the file, please send your design file to

6. HPGL Service

To get an individual engraving on your panel, i.e. your company’s logo, simply import your design as an HPGL file. Support documents are available on our website that will help you through the process of generating an HPGL file.

Another option is to have our designers convert your logo. Send us your logo as a vector file or a bitmap, and we will convert it to HPGL format. Depending on the complexity of the design, the conversion will be either $30 or $180. For a free, no-obligation quote for the conversion of your logo, please send your file to

7.Custom Quote

Front Panel Designer will automatically generate a price quote for you. During the design process, you can access it by clicking on the pricing icon in the tool bar. For orders of 30 panels or more, we are happy to provide you with a custom quote. Please contact our customer service department at and we will send you a quote within 24 hours.

Project of the month
This month, our Project of the Month showcases one of many improvements in Front Panel Designer 4.0... the ability to import custom shapes. Customers can now easily order custom exterior shapes and interior cutouts by importing a DXF file directly to Front Panel Designer. This new option opens the doors to a broader range of application possibilities, as demonstrated by Brian's project, C.A.R.L.
After milling panels by hand, Brian decided to give Front Panel Express a try when redesigning C.A.R.L., an “emotional” robot being studied by the Cognitive Robotics Lab at the University of California, Irvine. C.A.R.L., who is equipped with a simulated brain, has learned to differentiate between “good” and “bad” using his own real life experiences. Researchers at UCI use C.A.R.L. to study how humans break down the decision making process. Recently, C.A.R.L. has been featured on Discovery Channel's Daily Planet.
To learn more about C.A.R.L. and his life experiences, visit Space Eight Robotics.
