Anodized, with an electrically conductive reverse side

If there are increased demands on the electromagnetic compatibility of an electronic circuit, front panels (natural anodized, as well as all colors from powder coating) with an electrically conductive reverse side (RF performance) can also be used for the enclosure. The conductivity of the reverse side is caused by a layer of chromium (III) and aluminum phosphates, which is applied instead of an anodized layer.

Procedure

So-called "green chromating" is used to treat the reverse sides of the aluminum panels, whereby a greenish iridescent, chromium (VI)-free corrosion protection layer is formed, that is essentially made up of chromium (III) and aluminum phosphates.

The procedure complies with the requirements of DIN 50939 "Chromating of Aluminum" and has been successfully used for many years to protect aluminum for architectural applications from corrosion.

Compliance

Our green chromated aluminum surfaces are in conformity with the

RoHS ("Restriction of certain Hazardous Substances") Directive 2002/95/EC on Electrical and Electronic Equipment or
Directive 2002/96/EC (WEEE Directive = "Waste Electrical and Electronic Equipment Directive")
End-of-life Vehicles Directive 2000/53/EC,

which urge the chromium (VI)-freedom of all components used. A maximum of only 0.1 wt% Cr(VI) per "homogeneous material" is allowed.

Electrical resistance

For its use in the electrical and electronics industry, it is important that the green chromated reverse side of a front panel does not exceed a certain threshold value for contact resistance (Measurement in accordance with DIN IEC 60512 / Draft). This is approx. 500 mOhm for our panels.

The contact resistance of green chromated aluminum sheets is usually derived, with the help of proven tables, from the weight of the chromate layer, as these can be easily removed chemically and weighed. The threshold value of 500 mOhm is reached with a chromate layer weight of approx. 0.8 grams per m². Above this weight limit, the contact resistance increases rapidly and reaches a value five times higher for example with a doubling of the chromate layer weight to approx. 1.6 grams per m².
