Bending Chromated Panel
Doing an amplifier chassis out of 2.5mm anodized/chromated stock and want to make it a "U" shaped piece with bends for the front and back panels. I know chromium is brittle - how about the coating you use?
Looking at a rounded 90 at the rear and a sloped panel up front.
Also wondering about milling the inside thickness down at the bend points? I've done it with a carbide flat bit in a router with many many passes just shaving the metal, but wondering if there's a better way. I figure around a quarter inch wide and half the thickness the full width of the chassis plate should make it possible to clamp the panel and bend it by hand.

Hello,
The chromated finish is always on the back of the part (if not requested otherwise.) The chromated side is conductive, making it suitable for EMC applications.
I don't see a problem with bending it since it is on the back. However, the anodization on the front will crack most likely. We can send you some material samples if you like.
And there is always the possibility of machining customer supplied material. You can buy off-the-shelf u-shaped parts from many suppliers for reasonable money and have us do the machining. Just a thought.
Best regards,
Diane

ReplyWe are looking for an alternative to in house services in my group. I am wondering then if, as it sounds above if you can provide a panel anodized on front and chromated on back and infilled engraving on both sides.

ReplyHi Robert,
Thank you for contacting us with your inquiry and we are happy that you reached out to us as a possible new supplier for your group.
We offer anodized material as well as anodized material with chromated backsides that you can get engravings infilled on both sides as well. One thing we should mention is that we cannot guarantee a totally scratch free backside due to our production process and material handling so slight surface scratches might exist on the backside. Just download our free Front Panel Designer software to design your panels and let us know if you need any design assistance.
Please don't hesitate to contact our customer service in case you have more questions.
Kind regards,

Box with text engraving
Hello,
I'm designing an enclosure and was wondering if it is possible to have a rectangle which also includes text in the geometry. Much like this:
https://dl.dropbox.com/u/27445576/Audio%20-%20DIY/FPE.JPG
...with "INPUT" being the "title" of everything included in the box.
I guess it could be done with separate engraving lines (i.e. 5 lines and a text engraving), but I was wondering if there's an easier way.
Thanks in advance!
Kind regards,
S_P

Hello,
You can design it with separate engraving lines or you can prepare all engravings in a graphic program such as Adobe Illustrator or Corel Draw and import it as a plt file.
Here are some tips on engraving imports.
Best regards,
Diane

ReplyThanks for the prompt reply, Diane.
I think it'll be faster to just use separate engraving lines, add text and then group everything together.
Trouble starts when you have to resize the box. :D

Combined parts
I have 2 complimentary L-shaped parts. Is it allowable to submit them as a single "panel" separated by a cut? If so is the correct way of doing this using elongated shapes made with the hole tool?

Hello,
here is a link to an old post. It has combined parts as well.
Just give the L-shaped parts enough stability to not collapse during milling. I recommend a short "connector" of 10mm length all 120mm along the perimeter.
Best regards,
Diane

Dxf import Hypex Ncore logo
I am trying to import the Hypex Ncore logo into FPD as a cavity, but it does noet work. Could it be because they are seperate cutouts in one file???

Hello,
There could be several reasons. The best way for us to help you with a logo import would be sending the files to us (info@frontpanelexpress.com)
Best regards,
Diane

ReplyI am glad it worked for you.
My Dutch is very limited so I couldn't understand the post you linked to.
Please use the Front Panel Designer installation of our sister company in Germany whenever you get ready to order your design. Schaeffer-AG Download
This way your order from the Netherlands goes directly to Schaeffer in Germany and will not have to take the detour over our server in the US.
Best regards,
Diane

ReplyThe main problem with importing dxf files is problems with failure warnings about "not closed contours". If you encounter this problem you can try a simple detour:
1. Import the dxf file in Corel draw and export it to a Hpgl file ( .plt)
2. Import this in FPD as an engraving object.
3. Export the FPD design as a DXF file
4. Import this file into QCad and remove the panel outline
5. Save this as a R12 DXF file.
6. Import this file as a contour in FPD.

ReplyHi,
I placed a test order with Front Panel Express. Their customer service asked me to change the Logo so that it had "Centre Contours" and import as a HPGL. - This approach has gone nowhere!
I have just spent the afternoon, editing the logo on Corel Draw to remove the contours, then I went through the process you described above.
I am now able to import the logo a free contour in FPD - However I seem to have some scaling issues.
Is there any way that you can post a working FPD Ncore logo in the DIY Audio Forums?

DXF import problem
In an attempt to import a dxf file I get the following message:
"An unhandled exception occurred..."
I use Windows XP 32bit
Can you help me? Thanx

Hello,
My guess is that it is the dxf file itself. Can you please email both the dxf and the fpd file to my attention to info@frontpanelexpress.com
I will have a look as soon as you get a chance to send it to me.
Thank you
Diane

ReplyOk, thanks.
Tried starting form termial, but kept getting "command not found"
Not sure what I should be typing into the terminal>
FrontPanelDesigner, frontpanel and a few others I tried.
All gave the above error.
Posted By: acidblue on Mar 08, 2013 11:30PM
ReplyOk I tried frontdesign in a terminal and got this error:
frontdesign: error while loading shared libraries: libjpeg.so.62: cannot open shared object file: No such file or directory
So I installed libjpeg62,(I think thats what it was called), and now it starts.
I'll kick the tires and post back if any more problems occur.
