Front Panel Designer will not start on Kubuntu 16.10
I'm unable to get Front Panel Designer to start on Kubuntu 16.10 Front Panel Designer appears to be dependent on libpng12, which is a rather old version, so it fails to start. libpng16 is the current version. Anyone know a workaround? Can Front Panel Designer be recompiled so it will work with the current version of libpng?
Thanks

Hi Stan,
A possible workaround would be to install libpng12.
For 'libpng12' ubuntu suggest to install
libpng12 from the 'xenial' repository which refers to (K)ubuntu 16.04
This link will help with explanation:
https://askubuntu.com/questions/840257/e-package-libpng12-0-has-no-installation-candidate-ubuntu-16-10-gnome/840268
We will look for a better solution regarding libpng12 / libpng12 in the
future.

ReplyThis is also true for Debian Stretch (stable). I think I can hack a workaround, but adding support for libpng>12 would be great!. I love your product/services by the way.

Hole for press fit connection
I am producing a panel that uses standard Schroff IEC 60297 style hardware. I have attached a file illustrating the hole I wish to specify in Front Panel Designer. Please help. Thank you.

Hi Craig,
You can either use the 'insert system holes' tool in the toolbar or you can design the cutouts using the rectangular cutout tool and inputting the dimensions and corner radius you need.

Custom cavity
Hi,
I'd like to create a cavity with an arbitrary shape. I see that you can create circles, rectangles, circles-in-rectangles, etc. I'd like to import a dxf and use that as the cavity. This obvious feature appears missing from the software.
I searched on the forum and found one Customer Service Rep who said it can be done, here:
https://www.frontpanelexpress.com/support/forum/?tx_wecdiscussion%5Bsingle%5D=308
...but there are no details about how to import dxf and "specify it should be a cavity". Do we import dxf as a cutout and then specify in the notes section when we order that that should be a cavity instead of a cutout? If so, how do we tell the human operator which cutout we are talking about (if there are several)?
Thanks,

Hello David,
When you click on the 'insert free contour' tool in the toolbar the popup window will give you the option to mill as cavity. Just check the 'as cavity' option in the popup window and then you can set the depth of the cavity.

simple non rectangular front panel
I would like to create a slightly non rectangular front panel shape. I've been looking into hand editing a .DXF, but haven't found any easy to follow examples. Could someone help me or suggest another way ?

Hi Gerritt,
Email us the .dxf file you have and we will try to help you.
AdrianPosted By: Adrian on Jun 05, 2017 07:26PM
ReplyI don't have a .dxf file - I was trying to find something simple to start from and use a text editor to get the right panel shape. The shape I need is almost rectangular, but slightly tapered at top. Base is 254 mm. Height 79 mm. The first 30mm of the sides go straight up, the remainder goes to the top and 2.5mm to the right, so that top edge of panel ends up being 249mm.
I tried attaching a .pdf with a sketch, but don't see it. Hopefully the description is good enough!Posted By: Gerrit on Jun 06, 2017 08:06PM
ReplyGerrit,
Send me the sketch as an attachment to info@frontpanelexpress.com and I will try to import it into our software.

Use DWG or DXF file for cutout pattern?
Can someone help me figure out how to convert one of the attached DWG or DXF files into a cutout pattern for front panel designer?
I need to make a cutout that covers up all the LEDs around the b***ons.
The DWG file is located on this web page https://www.crystalfontz.com/product/cfa533tmikc-alphanumeric-lcd-display-16x2-i2c#datasheetsAttached File: CFA533_Family_HW_v1.1_2D_CAD.dxf

Hi James,
Please email me at info@frontpanelexpress.com so I can respond back with the .dxf of the cutouts? It is much easier to correspond vs the forum.

Postage to Australia
Hi, sorry if its my bad, but I can't seem to find any info on postage / shipping?
Anyway, do you guys post to Australia (Sydney)?
And if so, could you give me a ballpark figure on how much that might cost?
Thanks!Posted By: Cam on May 18, 2017 01:54PM Category: Ordering
Hi Cam,
The only way you can get an estimated shipping cost is thru our software. And since every package is different the costs can very. I would recommend you design the panel you need manufactured by us and go thru the ordering program and enter in your shipping information. Then select the method you would like from the drop down menu and the system will give you the cost based on your designs. If you have any other questions let us know.Posted By: Adrian on May 19, 2017 11:57PM
ReplyHi again Cam.
Should have added that we do ship to Australia.
