Hello Greg,
Thank you for contacting us regarding Front Panel Designer.
The hole that you need for a DVI coupler will depend a bit on whose parts you are using and what their datasheet calls for, but generally this will be a rectangular cutout and two drill holes.
What you might find really helpful would be to check out our tutorials available here.
If that is not helpful, feel free to send us an e-mail with more information about your specific part and we can provide more detailed assistance.

conductive finish
Do you offer an electrically conductive finish?

Hello Dave,
Thank you for contacting us with your inquiry.
We do offer a material that is anodized on the front surface and chromated on the back. This selection is available in the Materials drop down menu in our software.
Feel free to let us know if we can be of any additional assistance.

ReplyHello Paul,
Thanks for pointing that out to me. The chromated back will work well since it mates with the conductive coating on the connectors that I am using. However, I would really prefer a black anodized front surface that would match the rest of the black enclosure. Is there any chance of getting a black version of the chromated panel?
Thanks,
Dave Davenport

ReplyHello again Dave,
While we do not have any plans to offer the anodized/chromated material with a black anodized finish, we have successfully powder coated just the front side of several anodized/chromated panels black.
This service is available upon request, and it would meet the needs of having both a conductive finish on the rear and a black surface on the front, as well as adding the bonus that the edges of the panel are also coated black.
If we can provide any additional assistance, please do not hesitate to let us know.
Kindest Regards,
Paul

ReplyHello again Paul,
I think that powder coating the panel will work for me. I will get into the details of how to get the lettering on the powder coat when the time comes.
Thanks again, you have been a great help,
Dave

Negative depth cavity?
Hello to everyone,
I am new to the front panel express 4.11.
I need to design at the back of my panel an area that protrudes out from the surface. CAn this be done by specifying a negative depth for a rectangular cavity? Appreciate if you can advise if this is the right way to indicate or is there a technique for doing this with the software. Thank you.
Kenneth

Hello Kenneth,
Thank you for contacting us with your production inquiry.
There is indeed a technique to accomplish what you are looking for, but it's kind of the opposite of what you have indicated.
Since we are not able to add more material to the sheet than is already there, you would need to add a cavity to the back side of the panel that would mill away all but the shape of the protrusion that you would like.
More information on the cavity tool can be found in our video tutorial here.
Do note that, depending on depth and size, these cavities can take quite some time to mill, and consequently be somewhat expensive.
If you have more specifics on your application, feel free to e-mail us and we may have some alternative methods that meet your goals.

Problem in Linux
I am a brand new user. I am trying to try out your software on Ubuntu 10.10. I tried to open a dxf and it causes Front Panel Designer to close. I tried the Windows executable in Wine as well and it caused an unhandled exception and closed. Any known working linux distro that handles dxf imports without crashing? Beyond that...ever thought about making it a web app? Might be easier to maintain in the long run.

Hello,
I just went through our forum posts and noticed that you never got an answer from us. My apologies for that.
We had a new release in February that you might want to give a try. Please let us know if the problem still occurs after the update. If so, our software developers would very much appreciate your help in this matter by providing the crash-causing dxf file (please email to info@frontpanelexpress.com to my attention)
I am sorry for the inconvenience and hope we can resolve this issue shortly.
Best regards,
Diane

Hi,
I have a trouble during import a dxf file.

I have tried to import dxf file using another program and it's work.
Some one can help me?

Hello Marco,
Thank you for contacting us regarding Front Panel Designer.
There are actually two distinct DXF import functions built into the software: one for the perimeter shape and one for interior cutouts.
These are quite well covered in our April 2010 newsletter, available here.
If you have additional issues importing your DXF's, please do not hesitate to contact us by e-mail at info@frontpanelexpress.com.
